“Secretaries often do office chores, such as organising events or shopping for leaving gifts, which help ‘oil the wheels’ of teams. In the asset management industry, like elsewhere, secretaries tend to be women. ‘It’s a big societal challenge that men don’t aspire to be secretaries,’ says Justin Onuekwusi, head of retail multi-asset funds at Legal & General Investment Management. However, it is not just paid secretaries that tend to do office housework. That gender imbalance can be found elsewhere. Serving on diversity, equity and inclusion committees, taking minutes at meetings or mentoring new starters are all unpaid and “invisible” tasks that women tend to carry out.”
